Cinematography
continually provides me with great opportunities to test
myself. It is a forum which demands equal parts science
and art. I have found that after each life experience,
my work shifts into an unexpected direction. Stage acting,
theatre lighting, parliamentary debating, painting, film
editing, and traveling are all activities which have helped
me to refine my aesthetic sense. I am always trying to
use specific techniques to create a style, while stripping
away the unnecessary. Shots in a film must be balanced
in the same way that each brush stroke of a Degas is part
of the final piece. Not every shot should be the “Money
Shot.” I find insensitive cinematography which draws attention
to itself to be vulgar. However, I am familiar with this
mistake only because I’ve made it on many occasions. I
look forward to the Masterclass because it will be a chance
for us to discuss these and other issues. The experience
will certainly add to our understanding and ability for
the work which lies ahead.
