Social skills and competences Technical skills and competences
I have a lot of technical competences about emulsion (color negative film 35mm and 16 mm), cameras and support, lenses and filters; I have acquired this competences in my school in Rome, during 3 years.
Yash Bhatt
My first experience with film started when I assisted cinematographer, Amit Roy for 2 years and slowly graduated form being a grip to first AC. I learned from Amit not to get impressed by the mechanics of cinematography but to concentrate on telling the story in the most efficient way.
I came to Chapman University with a mentality of a gaffer or grip. I used to think of a movie in terms of technical achievements, but here at Chapman my teachers made me realize how important story is in the filmmaking process. They made me realize the difference between a cinematographer and a technician.
My experiences have helped me shoot short films like Till Death Do Us Partwhich was officially selected for eleven international film festivals like: L.A short international film festival 06 and Sedona film festival 06.
I also recently shot The Vaudevillian, which was nominated in the best cinematography category in the Cecil Awards 07. This film also gave me the recognition to become one of the scholars at the Budapest cinematography Masterclass 07.
Cinematography is all about understanding the right rhythm and making intuitive decisions and it is these designs that makes an image beautiful and reaches audiences. Let me quote Jean de La Fontaine "Beauty. Thankfully this word exists; else we would have said it is magic."

Assisted Cinematographer Amit Roy as 1st AC for all the above films. Which were shot for the Indian film industry and shot on 35mm film.
Why the Masterclass:
Film school made me realize how important story is in the process of filmmaking. It also made me realize the difference between a cinematographer and a technician.
After becoming a student of cinematography and thinking about filmmaking as a story telling process I had started making choices, which would help the story rather than just make a beautiful frame.
I started analyzing the work of great cinematographers like Janusz Kaminski , Gordon Willis, Vilmos Zsigmond and many others. In my process I started thinking like them and coming close to how and why they make a particular decision for a particular moment. The work of Conrad Hall was a huge influence on my films and I tried to teach myself how he achieved certain looks.
I have worked both in India and in Hollywood and have seen two different working styles. I have picked some good and bad things from both the styles and going to Hungary would give me another different perspective and experience.
Cinematography to me is an everyday learning process and I am looking forward to learn from my other 14 fellow students and share my style with them. Filmmaking is a collaborative process and I would love to help my teammates in achieving beautiful shots.
It is a great honor to be a part of the Masterclass.

Additional Information
Trained at the English National Film and Television School in studio, location and commercials lighting for 35mm, 16mm, High Definition and Digital Video under the mentorship of BrianTufano BSC (BAFTA nomination for Billy Elliot, Trainspotting and Quadrophenia), head of cinematography at NFTS, Stuart Harris (Golden Bear winner for Wetherby), Billy Williams BSC (Oscar winner for Ghandi, Oscar nomination for On Golden Pond, Women In Love) and Paul Wheeler BSC (BAFTA winner for Inspector Morse, author of Digital Cinematography and High Definition and 24P Cinematography).
First of all is suppose is I would love to learn how Vilmos Zsigmond and Elemér Ragályi think about lighting and operating. I would love to learn their 'philosophy' of cinematography. And also as a matter of interest I would love to see if there is a Hungarian style or point of view of what is good lighting and good framing (whatever is best for the story I hear you reply...), if you know what I mean. Up until now all my teachers have been English, so I am very interested!
I am also very interested in learning new lighting techniques and new lighting 'tricks'. I am looking forward to re-examining the techniques that I already understand (or think that I understand) and I am also very interested in trying out new techniques that I have never used or learnt before.
One thing I am very interested in is how best to improve close-ups after having lit wider shots. Is it better to flag off lights that you have used for the wider shot and re-light the close-ups or are there easier methods to use, such as using the existing lights in a different manner - such as using diffusion?
Also at the moment, because I work a lot on low budget shoots where time is short, I find that I have become accustomed to trying to pre-light the whole set to save time. Is this the best method? Any discussions of this kind would be welcome.
I don't know if framing and composition are the remit of the Masterclass, but recently I have become even more obssessed camera placement - any chance to discuss how to find the best camera placement to tell the stroy would be welcome.
I suppose I just want to re-examine what I think I understand about cinematography and I also want to learn as much as possible about cinematography, lighting, framing, operating and filmmaking in general on this two week Masterclass.
I just want to learn more about how to best tell a story using a camera and lighting!

Participating in the Cinematography Master Class program was always a dream for me. I am very lucky to have made it to the cinematography workshop as a scholar this year.
I am looking forward to the informative sessions with masters like Vilmos Zigmond and Elemer Ragalyi and sharing my experiences with other students who love this art-form as much I do. The idea of shooting the scripts provided by masters and later on watching the results is very exciting. I look forward to spending two weeks with two great masters.
