I am looking forward to the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass because I hope to not only expand my knowledge of cinematography, but to be surrounded and supported by people who share the same interests as me. I believe there is nothing more special and exciting than having people from different areas around the world come together because of one same passion. For this reason, I believe the Masterclass will be quite a unique experience, which I am privileged to be a part of. I love watching experienced cinematographers and learning from them, so I believe the class will provide an opportunity for me to enhance my skills and knowledge in the cinematography field. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this and very much look forward to collaborating with and forming lasting friendships with my fellow piers.

"At the heart of it, filmmaking is shooting – but cinematography is more than the mere act of
photography. It is the process of taking ideas, actions, emotional subtext, tone and all other
forms of non-verbal communication and rendering them in visual terms." - Blain Brown

In this statement I will explain what I hope to achieve as a participant in the 2011 Budapest
Cinematography Masterclass.

The knowledge base that a cinematographer must possess to perform their role at a
professional level encompasses lenses, exposure, composition, continuity, editorial needs,
lighting, grip, colour, the language of the camera and story structure. Through study I intend
to further develop my understanding of these tools and their potential to serve the story and
the vision of the director. The combination of knowledge of cinematic technique, leadership,
team work, understanding how each crew memberʼs skills can enhance the outcome of each
shot and utilising available resources to best effect all serve this vision. The knowledge and
resources available in the Masterclass and the opportunity to collaborate with other
cinematography students from around the world will provide an environment in which one can
practise the role of the director of photography and refine all the techniques described above
toward a more professional outcome.

The technical apprenticeship that I have undergone as a camera assistant over the past 6
years will provide a solid base on which to build a more sophisticated understanding of the
technical and creative elements that combine toward effective story telling. The intensive
nature of the course will be an opportunity to accelerate my understanding of lighting, camera
operating and post production processes while working on studio exercises in the
Masterclass.

Participating in the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass will also be an opportunity to
broaden my understanding of cinematic language and the theory involved in visual story
telling. Setting the mood and tone of the story, understanding the subtext of a story or a
character, and having an appreciation of cinema history, these are the first principles that will
determine the choice of location, film stock, camera, lens, and lighting requirements.
Moreover, I hope to explore how one finds the dramatic ʻessenceʼ of a story without
presupposing any particular style or fashion. Developing a process for adapting my visions
and beliefs to create unique and emotive images that are appropriate to the story and not
simply pulled "off the shelf" of current fashions in cinema.

In summary, participating in the Masterclass will be a period of transformation in which I take
all the skills and knowledge I have gained in the industry, build upon it through further
education, collaboration and practice, and ultimately walk away from the course with a more
comprehensive understanding of the tools and experience essential to a professional director
of photography.

Be there as a participant, in the middle of my study, is a great economic sacrifice and at the same time is an opportunity to open my mind, to train my eyes, to patiently look the other guys doing the work i want to do and to learn from them, helping them and collaborate with them, building their vision. I'm expecting a great experience full of creativity and hard work.

NOTES
Driven by the desire to express myself through visual storytelling, I have reached a point in my life where I recognise the importance of learning the craft of cinematography. In April 2005 I bought a Nikon FM 10. Then began a humble journey, which charted the course of the next five months of my life. I left the city and my job to explore Northern India. I was glad to find my calling. Hiking through the valleys, my lens reached out, Spellbound by the landscapes lost in time, discovering impressions in the mist that veiled my path. Moments started dissolving into images. Little kids in Dharmashala, who made the world smile with them, an old man who carried his highland wisdom in the lines that drew his face, a boy whose world opened up on a tiled roof. It was like finding a new light. Light. We see it everyday. Yet it remains a mystery. Ephemeral, changing in colour and intensity every passing moment; and yet is the only constant we know. And so like the boy who peeped out into the afternoon sun from his open roof in Himachal, I looked into a new luminance. Something changed inside me that made the outside world seem different. Some people I met became portraits. Places that affected me, a composition. Sometimes the eyes looked straight into the lens and spoke. Sometimes the overcast sky cast a soft shadow over the face and covered the eyes with a dark void. When I show my stills to people,I have an experience to share, a story to tell. My friends look at an image and sometimes I talk about the moment and how it felt. But often, the image is enough.

Well, attending BMC will most definitely help me improve my craft. It will also aid my self growth and give me the exposure of working with people from different cultures. Since, in film making we're expected to work with new people all the time so this will be a step in that direction. Meeting film makers from all parts of the world will furtherance my knowledge of cinema. An experience like this will surely inspire me and give me the confidence to pursuit my dreams.

Trough my participation in the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass, I wish to pursue my exploration of the art of creating meaningful images. I hope to deepen my understanding of the narrative construction of ambiances and signification trough light, framing of shot and movement. Even if I'm much more interested in art, signification, intentions and stories than in the specs of the latest camera or in the characteristics of a HMI, I do wish to improve my technical skills in order to master the cinematographic tools an be able to use them more freely during my creative processes as an emerging cinematographer but also as a director.

My expectations for this master class is that it presents the students with advanced information on the nature of cinematography. Knowing how selective the BPM is with such high standards for its scholars, and the high level of prestige associated with the instructors, I would expect that we can assume all of the participants have a very solid base in the fundamentals and theory of cinematography. This should allow the coursework to begin at a point well beyond the basics.
I want to learn from the unique experiences and situations our master instructors have dealt with, and learn what only they can teach us for those experiences. I want to learn the minutia, the details and techniques that take them from 98% to 99%. I want to learn how they approach a script, and how they decide to interpret it into a visual story. I want them to show us their work and tell us why and how they made the choices that they did. I want to learn more about digital technology and the future of cinematography. I want to learn how to approach the business of this business. I do not want to learn anything that we can read in a text book, because we already have that information, and I very much look forward to the individual views of our instructors on a level of experience and philosophy.

From the Masterclass i' m expecting an occasion to intensively think about what does it means being a storyteller who uses lighting to express himself.
I hope it will be an opportunity to reflect on narrative analysis, design of lighting, shooting, verification.
The direct comparison with the screening of the footage and the discussion that follows, will be essential moments of enrichment.
Very important for me will be the possibility of making mistakes and the possibility to recognize them because they are always learning opportunities, and often unexpected sources of inspiration.
I think that all these possibilities can be enhanced by an environment full of young talent from around the world and that the sharing of different routes can broaden and enrich the learning experience of all of us.
After all, the art of cinematography in the contemporary world, should be a cultural thing. To reinterpret the world with the light, to tell stories through it, the point of view has to be the expression of a man but also and necessarily of the culture it represents.

I am most looking forward to the new approaches to lighting that I will gain from the BCM's Masters and fellow Scholars, especially in the narrative context. By surrounding myself with cinematographers who are the best in their class from all over the world, I hope to condition myself to make the best decisions on set in the quickest and most efficient manor. To me film is still the best looking capture medium in the entertainment industry so I am also looking forward to working extensively in that format. Lighting continuity, lighting for multiple cameras, contrast ratios, lens filtering and advanced grip & electric strategies are among the areas that I would most like to master while in Budapest.

You need to understand a text in color and see it in his dimension, level, volume, perspective, its specific density. The stage will be structured by the characters themselves, by the lights, movement, masks and intercepting objects in perpetual motion. Light acts as a silent character, the shadow is the opposite and equal. Consider the importance of tonality, in the dramatic violence of the color; the black; white. Reflect on the key interpretive phrase. Its translation in atmospheres, light, shadow, color, movement¨. Antonin Artaud

In my view, reading a script and subsequent staging involves the translation of that text in images. These images produce feelings and altered states of mind of those who perceive them. Relations and combinations of light and shadow will create a climate, an atmosphere, a key light. The reason for the art of lighting, is to convey a synthesis of the relationship light / shadow, hot / cold with a unique interpretation. Our proposal is to suggest, not impose. Seeing is fundamental, see to sense, see to infer, deduce to interpret. The light should create an atmosphere where you can experience the drama.

I hope to enrich my technical skills and expand my artistic vision in the art of storytelling with moving images and share this experience with other people from different places and cultures around the world with the same interests but with different points of view and with one common goal, create climates, transmit moods and telling stories with moving images through the proper use of light.

I'm thrilled to be attending the Budapest Masterclass this year. As a practicing lighting technician and aspiring DOP, it's very exciting to have the opportunity to spend time working among masters and peers alike. I specifically hope to come away from the masterclass with a broader understanding and appreciation for different lighting techniques, and to see how other cinematographers go about planning and executing their lighting setups.

My expectations from Budapest Cinematography Masterclass:
- to get more knowledge about lighting and light equipment, and to try by myself a lot of lighting schemes
- to know how to make this or that light using examples from the movies I saw, and i love
- to work in a team
- exchange of experience
- to kill;)) my lack if knowledge as a DOP, because I came from photography.;)
- to try different cameras
- to try to find my own style
- to get more creative and get inspired
- to get to know some trucks:)
- to find my place in cinema world
- how to put director vision in reality
- low budget lighting
- make this type of light which is not visible, seams like everything was shoot with the natural light, window.., ect ("tree of life")
- special effects
- to know the common mistakes of DOP
- practice, practice, practice
