I simply hope to expand my knowledge of the field of cinematography, while I am at the Budapest Cinematography Master Class. There will be such a wealth of knowledge around me, that it is hard not to get excited. I hope to learn from my peers and my instructors. What are everyone's little tricks of the trades? The Master Class is an international class for a reason. Cinematographers hailing form around the world will be working with one another and sharing ideas. I am glad to be within such an environment.

I think that one of the most interesting things I am looking forward is to acquire the knowledge coming from the experience of the masters.

As in cinematography nowadays, there are two aspects in this domain I would like to deepen. The first one is the different approaches of the masters in film medium: exteriors, interiors, nights, etc. and different treatments of the emulsions in accordance with their experience and choices made in their own work.

Secondly, the electronic cinematography is increasingly becoming a tool to convey images. In this respect I would like to know the approach of the cinematographers dealing with the treatment of video signals whether it be standard or high definition to broadcast in video or transferred onto film in order to get the image aesthetics they are intended to create and its best quality on a “ what you see is what you get ” basis.

I am looking forward to the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass, not only because of the great learning experience I know I will have working with the world-renowned instructors, but also because of the opportunity to learn from the other attendees who are very talented student cinematographers from all over the world. I hope to learn a great deal about the art of cinematography from the on-set instruction of the Masters and to form lasting friendships and collaborations with many of the scholars and participants. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend the Masterclass this year and look forward to August when it gets underway.

10\2006 – today
Third year student at the Sam Spiegel school for film in Jerusalem.

1/2002-4/2003: Combat photographer
Responsibilities included: stills and video documentation of operations in the Central Command theatre (primarily operations in the West Bank); care and storage of photographic equipment.

Education history
9/1996-6/2000: Bet Yerach Regional High School
Major in humanities (primarily literature, plastic arts and art history). Also took advanced English and advanced mathematics.

I expect the masterclass to perform on two main levels- both the conceptual and the technical.
On the conceptual level I expect to learn about finding and creating the right visual style for a certain movie- beginning with the script – ways of creating a shooting script that translates the methods and concepts of the movie into a visual language.

On the technical level, I expect to study endlessly about lighting… how to paint with light, how to use our eye, before looking in any viewfinder of any camera or monitor, to create the right feeling.
Also I really want to understand more deeply the differences between lenses, the different qualities of different lenses.
I think that generally I want to study about timeless issues – such as lighting, camera movements, lenses, etc. instead of diving deeply into certain menus of the newest Sony HD camera…

I come with great hunger to the masterclass and with a lot of excitement, and not less important - I expect to have a great time and a lot of fun.

Current School Year: Final Year

Briefly answer the following two questions:

In 25 words or less, explain why you believe you would be the best candidate to attend the 2009 Budapest Cinematography Masterclass.

I want to sink myself into a world of short term memory thought provoking confusing blubber and continue asking mere questions like what do we really love, who are we at the end of the day, where do we go from here and why are we? I want to be able to capture all of that and more just by looking into the viewfinder as the film runs. This is my tryst with film, my love – till I run out of film.

Why would you like to learn more about shooting on film?

When you stand behind the camera looking through that viewfinder, as the camera rolls, the film flickers and you take the shot, it feels eternal, a feeling of a beautiful world you as team have created and how it inspires you to want more. Only film gives you such a thrill. The power to capture emotion on film is beyond what one would call god send.
I want to be able to learn to stretch the limits and boundaries of film and what it has to offer. I want to understand and be able to use film to its maximum potential and to be able to take risks when needed.
I want to learn how and why to create an atmosphere, a certain mood that only film can perceive and to be able to transcend magic onto the screen, which only film can do.
Film helps you push, pull and play with a few stops over and under still allowing you some more room to breathe, making it easy to work your way around, choosing from various emulsions and helping you to break free of difficult situations and where light is hard to get or place. I want to be able to do all of that and more.
I have not yet had the privilege of using the D.I process but that has only helped me strive to get what I want during the shoot and not rely on anything else except for my instincts and strengthen my belief in film and its great latitude.
I have seen the introduction of two new Kodak film stocks in India, the 500T Vision 3 which came out last year and which I’ve used so many times for night interiors. There was one instance where I merely lit a 12 by 10 room with only a single 60 watt bulb, no fill, full open, aperture being f1.3 (the focus puller wasn’t pleased at all). I saw the results a week later and that room had this glow and the cold stone walls had a shimmer and I knew that was it.
The latest edition to the Vision 3 family, the 250D recently came out in the market here. I saw the tests and I’ve been waiting to shoot with it ever since. It looked very promising; it had so much more detail and had even better colour tonalities.
Kodak 250D Vision 2 is by far my favourite stock when it comes to daylight exteriors or interiors and I can comfortably rely on it without the need to light up most of the time, though a Kino flo or a couple of ordinary day tubes always come in handy. I believe less is more and with the correct exposure the film stock always does the trick. I love the way the 250D controls the highlights and gives you a stark, raw, glowy feel.
I love shooting on 35mm but it’s always fun to shoot on 16mm as well. I got lucky and got to shoot on the Eastman Double X 7222 black and white film stock, it being a great experience for black and white takes you into a whole other world of zones and shadow play. I rated the film at 250 as we ran some tests and the lab was in favour of it. We do not have a good facility/lab to process black and white film here. I wish I can shoot more of/on black and white and be able to increase its viability by helping make better infrastructure to process and print black and white film in India.
I recently assisted on a short film and got to shoot on the Sony HD F35. They have a so called ‘film mode’ which we shot in most of the time and that boasts an 11 to 13 stop latitude with full 4*4*4 signals. As we went along the shoot, I realized that what we saw on the screen just would not compare to the tones we would have been able to get on film. It failed to do any justice and I felt cheated because it was so not real and human. We even did some tests on the Arri D21 and it just didn’t match up. I love film for every penny its worth and how it never ceases to surprise you with its quality and potential to go beyond. It’s amazing how the new ‘RED’ camera has been portrayed as a superhero and claims to be the next best thing. Maybe they’ve never used film, thus would never know what it feels like. All said and done, I’ve learnt that you can never duplicate or replace film.

I’ve come to the end of my final term at WWI, and just got done with a diploma shoot which I shot on 35mm on the Arricam ST. I used the Kodak Vision2 5201 50D, Kodak Vision2 5205 250D and Kodak Vision3 5219 500T. It was filmed with a good set of Hawk lenses. We shot most of the film on location, right in the dirty belly of the city and on the streets to give this real and gritty vibe to the film that no studio - set would have given us. We had a hard time dealing with the crowd but I loved every bit of it. I became more disciplined and was quick on my toes. For the next five days we took an initiative to make a set of rules as to what the look of the film would be like and how we would go about shooting it keeping the vibe constant through out, which was the hardest part. I want to perfect the understanding of a script in relation to be able to film it right and I want to be able to do it on film. I want to question the need to move or how long to hold on for and I want to be able to do it on film. I want to understand the timing of a shot without it being time bound and I want to be able to do it on film. I want to question on not how but why we see things the way they are and be able to shoot that on film. This is my tryst with film, my love – till I run out of film.
